A new test system is described for the evaluation of toxic levels of liposoluble products in the aquatic food chain using <i>Artemia</i> and <i>Mysidopsis bahia</i> (M.) as experimental animals. For this, freshly released juveniles (<24h old) of <i>M. bahia</i> are transferred to the experimental bioassay test system, cultured under standard conditions and fed 24h old purposely contaminated <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. After 11 days, data on survival, reproductive characteristics, individual length and dry weight are recorded and treated statistically.

Assessment of ammonia toxicity in contaminated sediments in the upper Scheldt (Belgium): the development and application of toxicity identification evaluation procedures OMA

The toxicity of sediment pore waters from 4 sites in the Upper Scheldt war characterized using modified Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedures The samples from all locations exhibited acute toxicity to the freshwater crustacean Thamnocephalus platyurus. The IIE approach was conducted using an enlarged battery of fractionation tests. Toxicity was removed or reduced significantly by the cation exchange resins and the air-stripping test at pH 11. Additionally, increased toxicity war observed at higher pH while a reduced toxicity war found at a decreased pH. From these TIE studies, ammonia war identified as the dominant toxic agent.

New developments in the mass culture and nutritional enrichment of the rotifer <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> using artificial diets OMA

A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich <i>Brachionus</i>. The present poster provides results dealing with culture aspects and rotifer nutritional quality. Different diet compositions based on single cell proteins enriched with various nutritional additives were evaluated. Results obtained so far demonstrate that a selected formula of a combined culture and enrichment diet, that does not involve the use of microalgae at all, can be successfully used for growing...
